The National World War II Museum
The stories of World War II soldiers are told through a vast collection of artifacts, film footage, photographs, personal effects, diaries and oral histories. New Orleans was chosen as the site of the museum, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, to honor Andrew Higgins, a local boatbuilder whose amphibious landing craft was credited by Dwight Eisenhower with winning the war. On display is a replica of a Higgins Boat used at Normandy. Interactive galleries take visitors from the early days of the war and the planning of the Normandy invasion, the massive air and sea assault on June 6, 1944, through the road to victory in Europe. Photographs, video presentations, Japanese artifacts and a 60-foot-square animated map are displayed. The film “D-Day Remembered” is shown. Call (504) 527-6012 for more information.
